On April 11, 1960, astronomers began the first scientific experiment that would search for extraterrestrial life.

Known as Project Ozma, this experiment looked for interstellar radio transmissions coming from other star systems. This was the first time that radio astronomy was used to look for aliens. The effort was led by an astronomer named Frank Drake at Cornell University. He used an 85-foot telescope at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in Green Bank, West Virginia to check out two nearby stars called Tau Ceti and Epsilon Eridani. He first pointed the telescope at Tau Ceti, but he didn't detect any signals. When he pointed the telescope at Epsilon Eridani, he did see a signal, but it turned out to be a false alarm. He later found out that the signal was created by military radar equipment and was definitely not aliens.

AN AMISH BUGGY that would normally be drawn by horses has been fitted with a turbo jet engine. “It’s like oil and water, they should not go together,” jokes its creator Chad Clark. The outrageous project, built by Chad Clark and Mike Monter of Millersburg, Ohio was originally meant to be something very different. “Mike and I were at our local county fair, I mentioned it would be really cool to build a turbine-powered four-wheel drive pulling truck,” Chad explained. But the auction description had misrepresented the engine as a turbo shaft engine. “I went home that night, found an engine online and bought it but didn’t realise it was not turboshaft, it was turbojet only,” Chad remembers. They ended up having to use a much lighter vehicle instead of the original truck. “We live in the Amish capital of the world so we figured an Amish buggy would be perfect,” Chad said. Co-creator Mike Monter told Future Studios Cars: “He called me up, said we’re not doing a pulling truck anymore, we’re doing an Amish buggy – seemed natural.” The build and modifications cost around $30,000 and took roughly 700 hours of labour to complete: “Many all-nighters,” Chad said. When out in public, people struggle to believe the bizarre creation actually works. “When people see the Thunder Buggy they can’t believe their eyes and the first question is, does it really move? Yes it does,” explained Chad. Traditionally, these buggies would have been moved by horses so this particular one is far from conventional. “The buggy is not designed to take 100 feet of electrical wiring, fuel tanks and a jet engine,” Chad admitted. With a top speed of 65 miles per hour before the wheels start shaking, this exhibition-only vehicle was not built for speed: “It’s a really simple engine design, it’s some pretty awesome engineering from back in the 40s,” explained Chad.

Wales is the kindest region in Great Britain.

Research, of 2,000 adults, revealed those in the country will carry out an average of eight acts of kindness each week, compared to the six that people in the East of England will accomplish.

Londoners took second place, closely followed by the West Midlands, and adults in the North West - while those in the East of England and South East residents came bottom of the pile.

It also emerged one in four adults across the country volunteer, dedicating an average of eight hours of their spare time each week.

The research was commissioned by Nissan, which is working with The Richard Whitehead Foundation’s Supported Runner Project [www.whitehead.foundation/supported-runner-project-overview], to help make Sunday's TCS London Marathon more inclusive.

It comes after the study also found 56 per cent would volunteer to help a disabled friend or person complete a sporting event, if they were equipped with the right tools and training.

Gold-medal winning Paralympian and Nissan GB’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Ambassador, Richard Whitehead, said: “It’s fantastic to see how people support each other across the country and so many would be willing to help disabled runners if they had the tools and training to do so.

“Helping others is not only incredibly important, but also very rewarding, so we’re delighted to give people the opportunity to do so around mass participation running events.

“The Supported Runner Project provides comprehensive training to volunteers, allowing them to offer all-encompassing support to runners with physical or neurodiverse disabilities before, during and after each event, helping to remove some of the challenges and barriers to entry that they may encounter.

“We’re looking forward to seeing the impact this will have at this year’s race and hopefully we can inspire even more people to take part in the future.”

The study also revealed the top 30 things people do to help others, with showing their appreciation (60 per cent) and holding a door open for someone else (59 per cent) coming out on top.

Donating old belongings to charity (44 per cent), checking in on a friend (37 per cent) and taking a parcel in for a neighbour (45 per cent) also made the list.

And while 51 per cent are kind because it’s part of their personal values, 28 per cent said it makes them happy and 27 per cent like to feel they’re ‘doing their bit’.

Half would like to help people out more often than they currently do, and 34 per cent would even go as far to say they wished they were a kinder individual.

A lack of time (42 per cent), money (41 per cent) and an introverted personality (34 per cent) are among the things holding people back from being more compassionate - although 43 per cent believe they’ve grown kinder as they’ve grown older.

It also emerged three quarters recognise the power of kindness, as they feel it has a positive impact on their relationship with others.

Like high-yield savings accounts that accrue interest, proof of stake blockchains like Ethereum encourage users to lock away their cryptocurrency for the sake of the network's security in exchange for more of the currency over time. It's a process called staking, but the caveat is that getting the ether back out can be a long and unpredictable process. Mara Schmeidt, 29, wants to solve this problem with her software company Alluvial. Alluvial works with clients like Coinbase, Bitcoin Suisse, Figment and six other crypto platforms to stake ether for their users. Thanks to Alluvial, ether owners are able to sell their cryptocurrency to users on competing platforms--increasing the pool of potential buyers. \
